Belfast School of Art – End of Year Show 2018

Congratulations to all the graduates from this year’s BA Hons Degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing! The degree show is always a lovely opportunity to get an insight into new, emerging talent. If you missed it this year, remember that the University Shop, ‘Unique’ is open all year, showcasing work by current and past graduates.

There was to be a strong sense of the individual maker’s identity in this year’s show, with some lovely contrasting approaches in materials and technique. This came across strongly in Eglė Banytė’s constructivist jewellery and the hammered steel in Kirsty Reilly’s ‘Fragility of Connections’ series. Jewellery Talks – August Craft Month 2017

Thank you to everyone who attended the Art Jewellery Network Jewellery Talks. This was is a lovely opportunity to meet and network with jewellers based in Ireland as well as get an insight into the practice of emerging and established makers. As part of the event everyone brought a piece of their favourite contemporary jewellery for the ‘Schmucktisch’. This provided a lovely chance to discover and discuss techniques, materials and inspiration.

Presentations by; Claire Skelton, Rachel McKnight, Niamh Hannaford and Melyssa Shannon.

Claire’s work also includes a video exploring the physical interaction between the wearer and her pieces adding another dimension to her collection. It was brilliant to discover jewellery spread through to the ceramics department this year, see Melyssa Shannon‘s wearable sculptures below.

HOME Exhibition opening at Space CRAFT, Belfast.

Some photos of our opening night on Thursday. With special thanks to Rachel Dickson, (Course Director of Contemporary Applied Arts at the Belfast School of Art) for officially opening the exhibition. We will feature some more information on each of the jewellers involved during the month of the exhibition.

This is an art jewellery exchange exhibition between Convoi Exceptionnel (Finland) and Art Jewellery Network (Ireland).
The project explores the theme of ‘Home’. What makes you feel like home? Is home for you a place, a state of mind, a memory? How does nationality effect these feelings? Every answer is different – the exhibition will present 18 point of views by the means of jewellery art.

Artist Jewellery Talk

A big thank you to all the lovely people who came along to our Jewellery Artist Talk on 20th August at Space CRAFT.

A number of the jewellers who are taking part in our ‘Home’ exhibition came along to our artists talks to present an insight into their personal practice and the inspiration behind their piece for the exhibition.

There was a great turn out for this event with a diverse mixture of people from the general public as well as jewellers. The feedback seemed to convey that it was insightful to hear the jewellers talk about the process and concept behind their work. Presenting conceptual jewellery to the general public is a challenge in every project that we do. We hope that this event helped to provide an engaging insight into our exhibition. There are many interesting debates on the identity of art jewellery which makes this such an fascinating field to work in.

About the ‘Home’ Exchange Exhibition:
The exhibition showcases the work of 9 Irish Art Jewellers alongside 9 Finnish Art Jewellers. Each maker has made a piece based on the theme of ‘Home’. The work is currently on exhibition in Taidebunkkeri, Finland, 4th to 30th August and will be on show in Space CRAFT, Belfast, 1st to 31st October 2015.
With the refugee crisis in Mediterranean constantly in the news, the concept of ‘Home’ is a topical one. Is it something you take for granted? Is home for you a place, a state of mind, a memory? How does nationality affect this? Every answer is different – the exhibition will present 18 points of view through jewellery.

Belfast School of Art – End of Year Show 2015

The last ever Orpheus Jewellery & Silversmithing Graduates.

Sadly, despite the #SaveTheOrpheus Campaign the lovely 1932 building by Samuel Stevenson will be demolished soon. This made for quite a nostalgic visit to the degree show this year. It is truly a pity that yet another historic building will be destroyed in Belfast despite much public objection. We wish this years graduates all the best in their new adventures and best of luck to the current jewellery department with their big move.

Below is a little insight into Jewellery and Silversmithing graduates. A very varied range of materials and influences were represented with a mixture of object based work, conceptual jewellery as well as wearable pieces.
