Belfast School of Art – End of Year Show 2018

Congratulations to all the graduates from this year’s BA Hons Degree in Jewellery and Silversmithing! The degree show is always a lovely opportunity to get an insight into new, emerging talent. If you missed it this year, remember that the University Shop, ‘Unique’ is open all year, showcasing work by current and past graduates.

There was to be a strong sense of the individual maker’s identity in this year’s show, with some lovely contrasting approaches in materials and technique. This came across strongly in Eglė Banytė’s constructivist jewellery and the hammered steel in Kirsty Reilly’s ‘Fragility of Connections’ series. NCAD Metals and Jewellery Graduate Show 2017

NCAD, Metals and Jewellery Graduate Show 2017

We had a great day in Dublin this month visiting the NCAD graduate show. One of the new graduates, Emma Larkin, kindly gave us an insight into the work on display. We missed the NCAD degree show last year and it is a pity to see that this year, similarly to Belfast the number of graduates is much smaller. However there were some very interesting pieces, such as Caoimhe McGuckin’s shoe brooch with lovely details (front & back) and Jessica Whittle’s Connectivity range which included individually made display cases for each piece. See the images below for more details.

Graduates this year include: Caoimhe McGuckin, Emma Larkin, Hannah Lawlor, Jessica Whittle, Sinead Christie and Sophie Scullion.

Two of this year’s graduates featured below you may recognise from our previous blog posts. Claire Skelton (Jewellery & Silversmithing graduate 2016) and Melyssa Shannon (Ceramics Graduate 2016).

Belfast School of Art – End of Year Show 2016

Ulster University – Belfast School of Art – End of Year Show 2016

Congratulations to the graduates from the Ulster University in Belfast! If you missed this year’s graduate show check out the images below to see the new emerging talent. The show looked great in the new spaces, a lovely diverse range this year by Silversmithing and Jewellery from product jewellery to conceptual/video work.

It was particularly interesting to see how Claire Skelton‘s work has developed as she previously took part in our ‘Home’ Exhibition. Claire’s work also includes a video exploring the physical interaction between the wearer and her pieces adding another dimension to her collection. It was brilliant to discover jewellery spread through to the ceramics department this year, see Melyssa Shannon‘s wearable sculptures below.

Graduates: BA (Hons) Contemporary Applied Arts Jewellery & Silversmithing: Claire Skelton, Alena McKeown, Michelle Redmond, Laura Gillespie, Lauren Millar, Michaella Donnelly, Sarah Fleming, Gemma McCutcheon, Sarah Heron.

 MFA Multi-disciplinary Design: Jolene Doherty.

BA (Hons) Contemporary Applied Arts Ceramics: Melyssa Shannon.

NCAD Metals and Jewellery Graduate Show 2015

We had a great day trip down to Dublin yesterday to see the NCAD graduate show. Below are some snapshots of the work, really stunning and diverse ranges. Congratulations to all the students!

We were particularly interested in seeing Jaki Coffey‘s MFA ‘Lust at Sea’ collection. We had the pleasure of exhibiting her amazing, curate your own skip (‘Lust in Found’) graduate work last year as part of our ‘Chain Reaction Exhibition‘ so her iconic yellow designs immediately caught our attention.

NCAD metals & Jewellery Graduate show runs from 13th to 21st June, 2015 then you can catch them at New Designers 2015 in London! (Stand JC18, Part 1).

Belfast School of Art – End of Year Show 2015

The last ever Orpheus Jewellery & Silversmithing Graduates.

Sadly, despite the #SaveTheOrpheus Campaign the lovely 1932 building by Samuel Stevenson will be demolished soon. This made for quite a nostalgic visit to the degree show this year. It is truly a pity that yet another historic building will be destroyed in Belfast despite much public objection. We wish this years graduates all the best in their new adventures and best of luck to the current jewellery department with their big move.

Below is a little insight into Jewellery and Silversmithing graduates. A very varied range of materials and influences were represented with a mixture of object based work, conceptual jewellery as well as wearable pieces.
